What is DVT Prevention?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein – most often in the legs – after surgery or long periods of inactivity.
When circulation slows, clots can block blood flow and, if left untreated, travel to the lungs and cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE).
In short: DVT is common, preventable, and something every post-operative patient should understand.

Who is at Risk?

Anyone recovering from surgery – especially orthopedic procedures involving the hip, knee, or spine – is at higher risk for DVT.
The danger peaks in the first few weeks after surgery, when mobility is limited and your body is still healing.
Common risk factors include:
  • Recent orthopedic surgery or hospital stay
  • Previous clot history or family history of DVT
  • Hormone therapy or pregnancy

Preventech

Sequential Compression Devices (SCDs) gently inflate and deflate around the legs to promote circulation and reduce clot formation.
This rhythmic motion mimics natural muscle movement, helping blood return to the heart – even when you're resting.
Your doctor may prescribe an at-home SCD system if:
  • You've had major orthopedic or spinal surgery
  • You'll be less mobile during recovery
  • You need added protection from blood clots while healing at home
